Francisco hit redial, not for the first time. He’d been calling Sarah for days leaving countless messages, all of which have gone unreturned. He knows he could show up at her door. He could knock and hope that she opens the door wide with a smile on her face, happy to see him once again, but his fear of a life where that doesn’t happen is enough to keep him away. He thinks of his father as he fingers the small ring, and he considers his options.

Lost and confused, he picks up his phone again, this time dialing a new number. It rings a few times and then there’s a familiar voice at the end of the line.

“Hey!” Chad says.

“Want to go out tonight?” Francisco asks. Without a clear plan of action to win Sarah back, he feels drawn to his old and comfortable ways, and he is dying to knock back a few drinks. Anything to help him forget, to help him cope with the loss.

Francisco was greeted with the regular fanfare when he arrived at the club. The bouncers were pleased to see him, the girls were even more so. The bartenders were already counting their tips in their head. You could see it on their faces, everyone knew that when Francisco arrived, the party got started. Booze would flow, money would fly, and the regular rules would drop like a curtain, but Francisco wasn’t feeling it tonight. All he wanted to do was drink.

“Get me my usual,” he said to Antonio, “I wanna get drunk.”

“Sure thing,” Antonio said with a wink.

Chad ushered some other customers out of their booth just as Francisco approached. Not a minute had passed and a group of women were already approaching the table eager to try their luck. Certainly one of them was hoping to be the woman he took home tonight, but Francisco only waved his hand and had Chad escort them away. There’s only one woman he wants, and she isn’t going to be at the club.

With a few drinks down, Francisco decides that he needs to dance. He doesn’t want or need a partner, but within seconds he is surrounded. The music has a driving beat and he closes his eyes as he sways and moves. He wants to feel careless. For just a few minutes he wants to pretend that everything is the same as it was, that the world is still the beautiful place it was just days before. Unbidden, the memory of Sarah in the bathroom floats into his mind. He remembers kissing her for the first time, the feel of his hands sliding over her body, and later, he remembers how it felt to be inside of her. His heart aches and he knows he has to do something. No amount of booze or dancing will ever erase her from his memory.

“I’m gonna go,” he says to the guys who were watching him from the table.

“Let me drive you boss,” Chad says as he begins to rise from the table.
